designing for spaces
(the end-of-the-year show)

Commonly, the Graphic Design Program End-of-Year show is understood as the exhibition that takes place in the D300 and D301 galleries (along with the motion show). Meanwhile, posters, website, e-mail blasts, Facebook page, etcetera, are experienced as supporting material. Another way to look at the show — and more importantly, design in general, is that the experience of the EOY show takes place in a variety of different “spaces.”

This class examines what types of encounters and experiences these different types of spaces might afford? How can they be imaginatively, yet pragmatically, conceived to give our friends, family, other CalArtians, potential future employers and collaborators an experience of the CalArts Graphic Design Program accomplishment? This class will be about the challenge/opportunity of the End of the Year show while we learn the modes and means of developing conceptual systems that take advantage of the affordances of particular “space” or “media.” Teams students will work collaboratively to focus on different creative aspects of realizing the collective vision for the show.
